Design Santa Fe’s donation to Architecture for Humanity will help to further that organization’s work around the world to address the social, environmental, and housing problems arising from natural disasters, pandemics, war, and political upheaval.

The donation to St. Elizabeth Shelter in Santa Fe is part of Design Santa Fe’s continuing commitment to supporting local efforts to provide high-quality housing and interior design to all segments of the community.

The 2011 Design Dialogue & Luncheon at the Farmer's Market

Architecture for Humanity co-founder Cameron Sinclair was the featured speaker at the event’s Dialogue & Luncheon, sharing the discussion with award-winning textile designer Susan Lyons and moderator Susan Szenasy, editor-in-chief of Metropolis magazine.

Inspired by Sinclair’s presentation, a group of architects and designers met recently to revive the Santa Fe chapter of Architecture for Humanity, which was originally founded in 2008 by architect Lindsey Love. The chapter fell dormant after the dynamic Love left town but is now being reactivated as a direct result of Sinclair’s compelling call to action.

The group is in the process of appointing two chapter coordinators and discussing initial project ideas. One project under consideration is a plan to address some of the physical damage and social problems arising from this past summer’s exceptionally destructive wildfires, which left many people homeless and caused damage and air pollution that is still causing problems throughout the state of New Mexico.

Open to both design professionals and the general public, Design Santa Fe 2011 embraces the theme “Change Makers,” which explores the role of design not only as an aesthetic imperative in our homes and workplaces but also as a force for social change. The panel discussion is moderated by Susan S. Szenasy, editor-in-chief of Metropolis magazine. Also participating are award-winning architect Cameron Sinclair, cofounder of Architecture for Humanity, and Susan Lyons, a noted textile designer specializing in sustainable technologies and materials. The three-hour discussion will be followed by a catered luncheon.

Design Santa Fe's Heather Van Luchene and Fern Finley hand over the $10,000 donation to Karen Rowell of the Youth Shelter.

Finally the moment we have all been waiting for: Last night Design Santa Fe’s Heather Van Luchene and Fern Finley handed over the donation of $10,000 from the 2010 event to Karen Rowell of the Youth Shelter.

That brings the total of our charitable donations to the Youth Shelter over the past 3 years up to $23,779.50. In addition members of Design Santa Fe have volunteered their design expertise to help make the Transitional Living Facility a place where teens want to be!
